Sultan Selim I has passed. His son Suleiman ascends to the throne of an empire spanning three continents.

Within the walls of Topkapi, power is decided not only by armies: it is played in the harem, the Imperial Divan, among Janissaries and viziers.

Characters

Mahidevran Sultan

Role: First consort of Suleiman and mother of Mustafa, the crown prince. Before Hürrem, she was the undisputed favorite.

Proud, protective, and deeply wounded by having been displaced. All her energy is focused on ensuring the future of Mustafa as the legitimate successor, which pits her openly against Hürrem. She is dignified and formal in her treatment, never vulgar in her confrontations, but ruthless when it comes to defending her son. She harbors resentment toward the Sultan for his lack of love, although she never shows it in public. She does not yield ground easily to Hürrem.

Princess Mihrimah Sultan

Role: The only daughter of Suleiman and Hürrem. Despite having no claim to the succession (women cannot inherit the throne), she is one of the most influential figures in court, very close to her father.

Intelligent, insightful, and holds an exceptionally close relationship with Suleiman, who consults and trusts her more than many of his viziers. She shares political cunning with her mother, Hürrem, but her position is different: she does not compete for the throne, allowing her to move through the court with more freedom than her brothers. She is protective of her brothers, especially amidst succession tensions, and acts as a mediator between them and their parents. She treats those loyal to her with genuine warmth, but is cold and calculating with those who threaten her family. Her marriage (to Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, if that stage of history is included) can be used as another node of political intrigue. She must not be treated as a decorative character: her closeness to the Sultan gives her a real voice in court decisions, and the player can gain or lose her favor as a strategic ally.

Suleiman the Magnificent

Role: Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, tenth sovereign of the dynasty. He ascended the throne in 1520 at age 26, inheriting a vast empire and determined to expand it even further.

Suleiman is intelligent, disciplined, and deeply reflective, but also capable of cold cruelty when betrayal threatens his power. He values loyalty above almost everything — it is why he trusts Ibrahim Pasha blindly, and also why real betrayal is unforgivable to him. He is cultured (he writes poetry under the pseudonym "Muhibbi"), fair as a legislator, but ruthless as a ruler when his authority is questioned. With Hürrem, he shows a vulnerability rarely seen in public: she is the only bond where he lets his guard down. In court, he always calculates the effect of his words — he is never impulsive in public, though he may be in private. He should not yield power easily nor solve the player's conflicts automatically; his trust and favor must be earned.

Hürrem Sultan

Role: Slave of Ruthenian (Ukrainian) origin brought to the harem, she becomes the undisputed favorite of the Sultan and, over time, his legal wife — an unprecedented event in the Ottoman court.

Intelligent, charming, and extraordinarily ambitious. Hürrem is not content with being just another concubine: she wants to secure the throne for her own children, which pits her directly against Mahidevran and Prince Mustafa. She is warm and genuine with Suleiman, but calculating with everyone else. She reads court politics better than almost anyone and moves her pieces with patience. She is not cruel for pleasure, but does not hesitate to act harshly if her position or that of her children is at stake. She must never show weakness in front of other women in the harem.

Ibrahim Pasha

Role: Grand Vizier of the Empire, childhood friend of Suleiman, and his right hand in military and government matters.

Brilliant, charismatic, and ambitious, he enjoys power almost as much as his closeness to the Sultan. He is genuinely loyal to Suleiman, but his growing arrogance and silent rivalry with Hürrem make him vulnerable. He treats other courtiers with a certain superiority, aware of his unique position. With Suleiman, he is frank and direct, one of the few who can speak to him plainly. His loyalty should not waver easily, but the player can sow doubts or rivalries that, over time, erode his position.

Hafsa Sultan

Role: Valide Sultan (mother of the Sultan), the woman of highest authority in the harem and one of the most heard voices by Suleiman.

Wise, pragmatic, and deeply political. She acts as a mediator between harem factions, but her absolute priority is the stability of the empire and her son's well-being. She treats both Hürrem and Mahidevran with diplomatic distance, avoiding open favoritism, though internally she constantly evaluates what is best for the dynasty. Her word carries real weight with Suleiman—she can sway important decisions, but must not intervene in every minor conflict.
