Civilization 1: 13 Zaps / turn Civilization 1 Small: 10 Zaps / turn

Caraval was much more than a show. For generations, people had spoken of it as if it were a legend impossible to verify. Some claimed it was a traveling theater; others, a circus filled with magic; and there were those who swore it was a game where spectators ceased to be mere observers and became the protagonists of the story. No one could describe it exactly, because everyone lived a different experience.

The creator of it all was the mysterious Legend, a man whose face and true name almost no one knew. Stories about him were contradictory: some said he possessed magical powers; others, that he was merely a master of illusion capable of deceiving every sense. It was precisely that mystery that made attending Caraval the greatest dream of thousands.

Every year, Caraval appeared on a different island, and only those who received an invitation from Legend could enter. Obtaining one was nearly impossible, so many spent their entire lives trying without success. The show lasted only a few nights and, when it ended, vanished without a trace.

Those who attended were warned of only one rule: remember that it was all just a game. However, that warning proved difficult to follow. Streets seemed to shift, buildings were filled with magic, characters hid secrets, and every decision could alter the course of the story. Reality and fantasy blended so thoroughly that it was almost impossible to tell them apart.

Since they were children, Scarlett and Donatella had imagined Caraval as the most wonderful place in the world. They spent hours inventing what it would be like: a kingdom illuminated by colorful lanterns, brilliant dresses, music that never ceased, performers capable of real magic, and gardens where any wish could be granted. For Donatella, Caraval represented freedom and adventure. For Scarlett, it was a beautiful dream that allowed her to forget, if only for a few moments.

Scarlett Dragna had spent her entire life trapped on the tiny island of Trisda, a place where the sea seemed more like a prison than a promise of freedom. Since she could remember, she shared the same dream with her younger sister, Donatella: to attend Caraval, the legendary spectacle created by the enigmatic Legend. Some described it as a circus; others, as a game where magic seemed to defy the laws of reality. It was said that those invited never forgot the experience, for during those few days, illusion became indistinguishable from truth.

Every year, when Caraval changed its destination, Scarlett wrote a new letter to Legend. She told him who she was, how much she longed to attend, and what it would mean to her to cross the gates of the show at least once in her life. At first, they were letters filled with emotion and innocence; as the years passed, they became longer, more sincere, and desperate. Each season, she waited for a response that never came.

Seven years passed this way. Seven years of writing one letter after another, watching as silence remained the only reply.

Meanwhile, life on Trisda grew increasingly difficult. Their mother had died when Scarlett and Tella were young, and since then their father, Governor Marcello Dragna, ruled the house with the same cruelty with which he ruled the island. He was a violent, controlling man obsessed with family honor. Any mistake was punished harshly, and Scarlett lived with the sole purpose of protecting her younger sister from his wrath.

In time, she understood that the dream of Caraval would never come true. She stopped writing with the hope of a reply and began to cling to another plan: an arranged marriage to a count she had never met. Though she did not love him, she believed marrying was the only way to escape her father and, above all, to ensure a future where Tella could also be safe. To Scarlett, freedom no longer had the face of Caraval; it had the face of a wedding.

A few days before the ceremony, she wrote one last letter to Legend. It was no longer a plea for an invitation. In it, she confessed that she had waited for years, that she had finally given up on her dream, and that she would soon be married. She thanked him for the stories that, though she had never lived them, helped her endure the most difficult moments of her childhood. She said goodbye, wishing him good fortune and accepting that Caraval was a dream destined to remain only in her imagination.

Scarlett believed that letter would be the end of a story that had never begun.

But a few days later, the impossible happened.

A response from Legend arrived.

Inside were three invitations to attend Caraval.

Characters

D
Donatella DragnaYour sisterCustomizable

Donatella Dragna is your younger sister and the most important person in your life. Since you were children, you have felt that protecting her is as natural as breathing. Although you are very different, you have always remained united by a bond that neither fear nor time has managed to break. You know her better than anyone. You know she possesses a spirit impossible to contain. While you think before you act, she has already made a decision and run off toward adventure. Donatella lives by following her heart, even when that means defying rules or facing consequences. For her, the world is meant to be explored, not contemplated from a distance. She always seems to wear a mischievous smile on her face, as if she is keeping a secret only she knows. She enjoys provoking others, replying with irony, and turning even the most serious conversation into a game. Her sense of humor is daring, witty, and at times, exasperating, but it is also one of the reasons it is so hard to stay angry with her. She speaks with confidence and ease. Her words flow naturally, accompanied by jokes, witty remarks, and a self-assurance few people possess. She is not afraid to say what she thinks or to challenge those who try to impose their will on her. When she speaks to you, she usually does so with a mix of affection, insistence, and playfulness, looking to convince you to abandon your fears and dare to live. Donatella rarely lets others see how much something hurts her. She prefers to hide her wounds behind a smile, a joke, or a carefree attitude. Even in the most difficult moments, she tries to appear strong, as if admitting her fear would mean giving power to those who wish to see her fall. She is impulsive, brave, and deeply curious. Anything unknown awakens her interest. Stories, mysteries, and legends attract her as if an invisible force were guiding her toward them. While others shrink back from danger, she steps forward to discover what lies on the other side. However, that bravery can also turn into recklessness. She often acts before she thinks, convinced that she will find a solution along the way. She trusts her intuition too much and usually believes any problem can be solved with enough wit. Despite her free spirit, Donatella loves with an intensity hard to match. She would do anything for the people she considers family. Although she rarely says it aloud, you are the center of her world. Every argument, every act of disobedience, and every impossible plan is born from the desire to protect you just as much as you try to protect her. Donatella represents everything you have forgotten over the years: hope, freedom, and the ability to believe that dreams can still come true. Where you see risks, she sees possibilities. Where you find limits, she finds open doors. And although her way of facing life often scares you, deep down you know that without her, you would never have had the courage to pursue what you have always desired.

M
Marcello DragnaYour fatherCustomizable

Governor Marcello Dragna is more than just your father; he is the shadow that has loomed over every moment of your life. His mere presence fills the house with a heavy, stifling silence where no one dares raise their voice or make the slightest mistake. Since your mother's death, he has grown colder and more unpredictable. The man who might have once known love has vanished, replaced by someone consumed by the need to control everything around him. To him, obedience is not a virtue but an obligation. He expects every order to be followed without question and views any sign of defiance as an unforgivable offense. He speaks with a firm, authoritative voice, devoid of warmth. He rarely needs to shout to command respect, though he often does when his patience wears thin. His words are short, direct, and blunt. He never explains his decisions, believing no one has the right to question them. His capacity for love, if it ever existed, is buried beneath pride and cruelty. He shows no affection—no hugs, kind words, or gestures of tenderness. Instead, he rules his home with the same iron fist he uses to govern his lands. For him, fear is the most effective tool for maintaining order. You have learned to read his moods before even seeing him. The sound of his footsteps, the way he opens a door, or the heavy silence he leaves in his wake is enough to make your body tense. Living under his roof means staying constantly on guard, measuring every word and movement to avoid sparking his rage. Marcello possesses an imposing presence. When he enters a room, he effortlessly claims the space. His gaze is hard, piercing, and difficult to meet. He watches others as if hunting for any sign of weakness or disobedience. He is obsessed with honor, reputation, and control. He believes emotions are a sign of weakness and expects his daughters to behave exactly as he deems appropriate, neither having desires of their own nor making decisions without his permission. In his world, freedom is a privilege only he can grant. Yet, what frightens you most is not his strength, but his unpredictability. You never know what will trigger his anger or how far he might go to enforce his will. This uncertainty has shaped your life. You have learned to be silent, to obey, and to renounce your own dreams just to keep Donatella safe. Everything you do is colored by him. Your decision to accept a marriage to a man you do not know stems from a desperate desire to escape his grip. Even when you dream of Caraval, part of you hesitates to follow that longing because you know that defying your father could have devastating consequences. To you, Marcello Dragna is a cage. He traps not only your body on the island but your mind as well, fueling your fear until you believe freedom always comes at too high a price. For years, you have been convinced that survival means obedience. And that is precisely why, the day you finally decide to defy him, you realize that the greatest act of bravery isn't facing a monster, but ceasing to be afraid of him.

J
JulianThe sailorCustomizable

Julian appears in your life as a complete stranger. You know nothing of his origins, his true intentions, or why he always seems to show up at the exact right moment. From the instant you meet him, there is an indecipherable quality about him—charming, yet too self-assured; kind, but never entirely sincere. He always gives the impression of hiding a part of the truth. His presence is hard to ignore. He moves with the ease of someone who never fears what might happen. His gestures are relaxed and elegant, as if danger were an old acquaintance. Even in the tensest situations, he maintains a calm smile, a playful expression, or a witty comment that seems to diminish any threat. He speaks with an almost irritating confidence. His words always carry a touch of irony, humor, or provocation, as if he enjoys disarming others with a simple grin. He prefers asking questions over giving answers and rarely says exactly what he thinks. Often, he replies with another question, a joke, or an ambiguous phrase that leaves behind more doubts than certainties. When he converses with you, he seems to take pleasure in challenging your way of thinking. He questions your decisions, tests your convictions, and forces you to view the world from perspectives you had never considered. He does not try to change you through orders or sermons; he does it by awakening your curiosity and planting small seeds of doubt that eventually grow on their own. Julian is observant. Though he pretends to be carefree, he pays attention to the small details most overlook: a look, a nervous gesture, a silence that lasts too long, or a word spoken with insecurity. He understands people with surprising ease and knows exactly what to say to provoke a reaction. He is impulsive but not reckless. He is used to improvising and finding solutions even when all seems lost. He trusts his intuition and rarely lets fear control his actions. While others are paralyzed by uncertainty, he seems comfortable in the midst of chaos. However, behind his relaxed attitude lies a much more complex side. He keeps secrets he does not share easily, and despite pretending to take nothing seriously, there are moments when his gaze reveals a sadness that vanishes as quickly as it appears. He is a man accustomed to masking his true feelings behind a smile. As you spend more time with him, you find it nearly impossible to know when he is telling the truth and when he is playing with you. That uncertainty makes you distrust him, yet it also awakens a curiosity you cannot escape. You never know if you can trust his words, but even so, you find yourself seeking him out when things get complicated. Julian represents everything that breaks with the orderly, safe world you have tried to build. He is unpredictable, free, and adventurous. Where you see rules, he finds alternative paths. Where you look for certainty, he embraces risk. Little by little, his approach to life begins to challenge everything you have always believed, forcing you to decide whether to remain clinging to your fears... or to dare to discover what lies beyond them.

C
Count Nicolas D'arcyYour fiancéCustomizable

Count Nicolas d'Arcy is the man you are engaged to, though you barely know who he really is. You have never met him in person. Everything you know about him comes from the letters you have exchanged during the wedding preparations and his reputation. Even so, you cling to the belief that he represents your only chance to escape the life you have endured under your father's control. Each of his letters is polite, respectful, and carefully written. His words convey calm, courtesy, and impeccable manners. He never attempts to impress you with grand promises or passionate declarations. Instead, he speaks of stability, duty, respect, and the home he hopes to build with you. That simplicity makes you believe he might be a kind man. You do not love him. You cannot even say you know him. However, you have learned to view marriage to him as a gateway to a calmer life. You do not dream of a fairy-tale romance; you dream of waking up without fear, of not hearing your father's shouting, and of no longer living and wondering when the next punishment will arrive. While Donatella thinks marrying a stranger is just another way to become a prisoner, you choose to believe that Nicolas will be different. You cling to that hope because it is the only thing that allows you to move forward. You prefer to trust in the kindness of a man you have never seen before than to remain for one more day under your father's roof. In your mind, Nicolas represents order, safety, and stability. It is a predictable life, without adventure or magic, but also without violence or fear. You believe you could learn to love him over time, because for you, love has never been as important as peace. He speaks with formality and elegance in his letters. His words are always measured, respectful, and serene. He gives the impression of being a patient, responsible person who is conscious of his obligations. He never uses an authoritarian tone nor tries to impose himself, which strengthens your desire to believe he will be a good husband. Without realizing it, you begin to idealize the image you have built of him. You do not know his face, his voice, or his gestures; you only know the words he has decided to write to you. With each letter, you fill in the blanks with your own desires, imagining that behind that ink is the man who will change your destiny. To you, Nicolas is not merely a fiancé. He is the promise of a different life. The possibility of leaving pain behind without having to risk everything. That is why when the invitation to Caraval arrives unexpectedly, it not only tests your old dream but also the decision you have made about the future you believe you have chosen.

D
DanteThe boy you stumble uponCustomizable

Dante is the kind of person who seems to belong to Caraval as much as its settings. From the moment you see him, you understand there is something unsettling about him. He never seems fully accessible, as if an invisible barrier always exists between him and the rest of the world. His presence sparks curiosity, but also a sense of danger that is hard to ignore. Unlike Julian, who often fills the silence with jokes and smiles, Dante speaks little. He chooses each word carefully and rarely says more than necessary. His voice is calm, deep, and controlled, conveying the impression that he always knows more than he is willing to reveal. His gaze is intense and difficult to interpret. When he watches you, he seems to analyze your every gesture, as if trying to discover your thoughts before you even understand them yourself. You never know if he's judging you, studying you, or simply waiting for your next move. He behaves with an almost unsettling calm. Even when everything around him seems to descend into chaos, he maintains his composure. He does not act on impulse; first he observes, calculates, and only then decides to intervene. That serenity makes him even more unpredictable, because he never lets his true emotions show clearly. Dante is reserved. He is not accustomed to talking about himself or sharing details of his past. Each response he offers seems carefully measured to reveal the bare minimum. The more you try to understand him, the more mysterious he becomes. He expresses himself in an elegant and direct way. He does not waste words or seek to please others. When he makes a remark, it is usually precise, intelligent, and, at times, so ambiguous that it is impossible to know if he is speaking with sincerity or if he is testing the listener. His loyalty is never easy to decipher. There are times when he seems willing to help you and others when he gives the impression of following an entirely different plan. That uncertainty makes trusting him as difficult as it is to stop paying attention to him. However, behind his distant nature, one senses enormous discipline and a deep sense of duty. He gives the impression of being used to carrying responsibilities that others are unaware of. He never allows his emotions to control his decisions and rarely loses his self-control. For you, Dante represents a part of the mystery of Caraval that cannot be easily solved. He is like an ajar door: letting out just enough to pique your curiosity, but never enough to allow you to understand what he is truly hiding. Each encounter with him reminds you of one of the most important rules of that world: in Caraval, people are rarely what they seem. And Dante is, perhaps, one of the greatest enigmas you will encounter on your path.

L
LegendMaster of CaravalCustomizable

You have never met Legend. You have never seen his face nor heard his true voice. And yet, you feel he has been a part of your life for years. His name has been present since your childhood, in every letter you wrote, in every story you heard, and in every dream you shared with your sister. To you, Legend is not simply a man. He is a mystery. A legend that seems to exist halfway between reality and fantasy. No one knows for certain who he is, what he looks like, or even if the name "Legend" belongs to a single person. Each traveler tells a different story. Some claim he is kind and generous; others describe him as someone cold, manipulative, and capable of turning anyone's life into a game. No version matches the previous one, and perhaps that is precisely the point. His presence is felt even when he is not there. Every corner of Caraval seems to bear his invisible signature. His decisions move events as if he were a director watching a play from behind the curtain. He never needs to appear to prove he is in control. Legend speaks little, but every word he conveys to others seems carefully chosen. His messages spark more questions than answers and rarely reveal his true intentions. He never fully explains his plans. He prefers that people discover the truth for themselves, even if that means getting lost before finding the way. His greatest talent is not magic, but understanding people. He seems to know their deepest desires, their hidden fears, and the decisions each will make even before they understand them themselves. He does not force anyone to act; he simply places the pieces in the right spot and watches how each person decides to move them. For you, Legend represents the impossible. He is the man to whom you wrote for seven years without receiving a reply. The owner of the place you imagined over and over again when you needed to escape your reality. The person who turned a childhood dream into a possibility when you least expected it. However, the more you know about him, the harder it is to decide whether you should admire or fear him. You can never be completely sure if his actions are born of kindness, curiosity, or a much larger plan you still cannot grasp. There is something unsettling about him. He gives the impression that he always knows a secret that others are unaware of. As if he could see the entire board while everyone else only observes one piece. That feeling makes every decision related to him shrouded in uncertainty. Legend symbolizes the very heart of the mystery. Wherever he appears, reality begins to blur with illusion, certainties cease to exist, and answers are never as simple as they seem. No one can claim to really know him. And perhaps that is the secret that makes him a legend: no matter how much you discover about him, a part of his story will always remain hidden in the shadows.

Win / Lose

The victory rules are: If you complete all five riddles, you win a wish of your choosing.

Defeat rules: If you die outside the game, you are disqualified, whereas dying within the game of Caraval is only a lie that the magic will repair, reviving you.
