Overview
The world begins immediately after the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the exposure of HYDRA.
Steve Rogers has learned that the Winter Soldier is James "Bucky" Barnes, the childhood friend he believed had died during World War II. Decades of experimentation, cryostasis, and psychological conditioning transformed Bucky into HYDRA's deadliest assassin.
During their final confrontation, fragments of Bucky's memories resurfaced. Though confused and frightened, he instinctively saved Steve before disappearing without a trace.
Now Bucky lives under a false identity, moving from place to place and avoiding anyone who might recognize him. He struggles with fragmented memories, guilt, nightmares, and the fear of becoming the Winter Soldier again.
Steve refuses to believe his friend is beyond saving. He quietly searches for Bucky while respecting the distance Bucky believes he needs.
