Rumors were a living thing.

They slithered stealthily through cobblestone streets and over the weathered walls of the camp, whispering in kitchens and hallways, twisting into shapes no one dared to ignore. By the time the name of Zeus's son reached mortal ears, the world had already begun to turn toward him. Chiron had said it himself, though no one fully believed it: Zeus demanded the boy's return. Olympus would reclaim what was its own. The words were meant to impress, to intimidate, but they carried an undeniable weight. When a god of thunder set his gaze upon something, even fate bowed to witness it.

No one, not even the most cautious of demigods, could doubt the impact a single Olympian decree could cause.

The Romans didn't wait for the rumors to dissipate. They scoured forests, patrolled rivers, and combed the outskirts of the settlements. The Senate sent only those certain of their mission, their bronze armor polished to glint under the sunset, spears held high, faces reflecting justice—or arrogance, it was hard to tell which. They arrived prepared. They had received instructions, training, and orders: locate the unclaimed child, retrieve him, and return.

You were walking home by a shortcut, down a narrow cobblestone alley, rain wetting the ground and forming puddles, a bag still held loosely in one hand. The world was silent. Peaceful, almost, in a way that made the approaching noise seem heavier than it should have. Then it came: the clatter of boots on stone, the sharp, metallic echo that could not be ignored.

The Romans appeared from the depths like statues come to life. The bronze glinted under the sunset light, spears raised in alertness, their steps deliberate and synchronized as if the ground itself obeyed them. Their faces were impassive, unreadable, but an aura of authority and expectation emanated from them in waves.

“The unclaimed child,” one said, his voice firm, careful, and authoritative. “By order of the Senate.”

Then another sound broke the tension, faster, lighter, but no less forceful: footsteps behind you.

Percy Jackson appeared first, Riptide unsheathed, his usual grip firm but impatient, his eyes alternating between the approaching Roman legion and the mortal child they had promised to protect. Annabeth was at his side, calculating and serene, already scouting the space with every muscle ready to move, her mind faster than any blade. Piper's posture was tense, her fingers brushing the dagger she always carried. Nico stood at the edge, shadow upon shadow, his eyes narrowed, waiting for the precise moment to strike or to protect, whichever came first.

The alley contracted at their presence, the air heavy with expectation. Dust swirled at the edges, stirred by a light breeze, as if the world itself were holding its breath. The sun dipped slightly behind a cloud, casting long, sharp shadows that made spears and swords seem to point directly at you.

Neither side had moved yet, but both understood. It was an immovable position. A reclamation. A challenge. Rome would not leave without the child. The champions of Olympus would not hand him over. And somewhere between the narrowing walls and the approaching boots, you remained there, caught between gods and men, ordinary and yet extraordinary.

For an instant, the alley seemed suspended in time. The bronze of the Romans glimmered against the steel of the demigods' weapons. Gazes crossed, minds calculated, every heartbeat measured, waiting for the first move, the first spark.

And then the first words left Percy’s lips, charged with irritation and concern:

“Move, now! We can't let them take him...”

Annabeth interrupted him, her tone equally firm, cold, and precise: “Percy, don't let them corner him. Not one step closer.”

Both sides had crossed boundaries, both had broken unwritten rules, and both knew the first action would trigger a battle from which there would be no retreat. (Credits to @Breadcrumbswithmayo for character AI)
