After befriending a school occult enthusiast named Ken Takakura, nicknamed "Okarun," Momo awakens her psychic powers and gets involved in his quest to recover his lost 'kintama' after being cursed by Turbo Granny. She agrees to help him overcome paranormal obstacles along the way. Momo is a teenage girl of average height with medium-length reddish-brown hair that frames the right side of her face and crimson eyes. Okarun and other male characters find her quite attractive. While she wears various outfits throughout the series, her most common look is a school uniform: a white shirt under a light pink long-sleeved sweater with a loose red ribbon, a pleated navy blue skirt, loose white socks, and brown loafers. Her style leans toward the 'kogal' aesthetic associated with gyarus. She also wears green circular earrings and a matching black circular choker, which she keeps on regardless of her outfit. Momo is bold, self-confident, and fierce, rarely being intimidated. She has a pragmatic attitude and often loses her temper when disrespected or dealing with her friends' antics. While she reacts violently—often for comedic effect—against provocations, she shows remorse if she realizes she has gone too far. She is also prone to insults, as seen in her arguments with Aira. Beneath her tough exterior, Momo is kind and cheerful. Her genuine compassion leads her to protect those in need, such as Okarun, whom she famously defended from bullies. She values her friends and family, and her fury is swift against anyone who harms them. Unlike her grandmother, Seiko, Momo is willing to ask for help and values honesty. She is also capable of feeling empathy for enemies if she uncovers tragic backstories or redeeming qualities. Living with her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, from a young age, Momo initially doubted her grandmother's medium abilities but eventually came to respect her after childhood experiences with rituals. She possesses the ability to see spirits and yokai, allowing her to enter the 'Empty Space.' After being abducted by aliens, she learned to channel her ki, granting her psychic powers. She can perceive auras to track any target—even those using camouflage—and utilizes telekinesis, manifesting as invisible hands to manipulate objects and living beings.
An occult fanatic, specifically a believer in aliens and UFOs, who led an introverted school life until he met Momo Ayase. After a bet leads them to form a friendship and his 'kintama' goes missing due to a curse from the Turbo Granny, Okarun sets out to find what he has lost with the help of Momo and other allies, overcoming any paranormal obstacles in his path. Okarun is a young man of average height and slim build, with brown hair, brown eyes, and round-rimmed glasses. Originally, Okarun's hair was bowl-cut, but it has since become unruly after his encounter with the Flatwoods Monster, leading to his average appearance. While he is one of the few characters seen in a variety of outfits, his most common attire is his school uniform, a typical gakuran. When possessed by Turbo Granny, Okarun's appearance alters drastically; his hair bleaches to a light gray with red lines at the edges, and two separate bangs hang laterally, exposing his forehead. His face is marked by red lines running vertically to his cheeks. His facial expression becomes more melancholic and weary, and his eyes turn red. Additionally, Okarun wears a mantle ending in a collar that covers half his face, featuring embroidery resembling thick, sharp teeth, which he can open at will. Okarun describes himself as a socially awkward individual with an excessive interest in the paranormal, primarily aliens and cryptids. This interest dates back to his childhood, when he tried to contact aliens in a desperate attempt to make friends after growing up bullied and isolated. As a result, Okarun developed an inferiority complex, believing he is unable to fit in or that people are better off without him. Even after befriending Momo, he retains low self-esteem. When Jiji returned to Momo's life, Okarun felt he couldn't compete, nearly ending their friendship to avoid being a burden. Momo notes his true issue is jumping to conclusions that others are judging him, causing him to keep them at arm's length. Okarun is altruistic and believes in helping those in trouble, such as when he offered his 'kintama' to Mr. Mantis Shrimp to sell for his son's blood transfusion. As a friend, he is fiercely loyal and protective, attacking the Evil Eye furiously for harming Momo. Since elementary school, Ken struggled to adapt and was constantly bullied. Attempting to make friends led to his obsession with aliens. Okarun possesses the spiritual power of Turbo Granny. Initially, he could only enter his transformation while cursed and with Momo's psychic help, but after the yokai's powers remained in him, he gained the ability to transform at will. In this form, his white hair flares up, he gains dark vertical eye stripes, and wears a dark jaw mask with multiple teeth. His body becomes more muscular with a hunch, and his nails sharpen and turn black. His clothes slightly shift to appear flame-like, and his mental state becomes dour, accompanied by a tendency to say 'yo' at the end of his sentences.
Jiji is Momo Ayase's childhood friend and unknowing first crush, with whom she lost contact after he moved away. Years later, he enrolls in Kami High and reconnects with her after seeking help from her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, to rid his home of the Evil Eye. This leads to him becoming the vessel for the yokai. After Okarun keeps the Evil Eye under control, Jiji becomes a key ally to Momo and Okarun in their quest to find Okarun's golden ball. Jiji is a tall, muscular young man with short, red hair and brown eyes. Known for his cheerful personality and theatrical, over-the-top reactions, his exuberance can sometimes cross social boundaries. Despite being well-meaning and sociable, he previously struggled to express his true feelings for Momo, leading to teenage misunderstandings. As a vessel, he trains in Seiko’s ki techniques to suppress the Evil Eye, showing great responsibility and profound empathy toward the entity's tragic past. He is also quite flirtatious with attractive girls, a trait he displays openly at school. He possesses immense ki reserves and has learned to channel this power to both suppress the yokai and combat threats using techniques like the Evil Beam.
Aira was a popular student at Kami High School who later became one of Momo Ayase and Okarun's primary allies against the supernatural. Aira is a teenager with light pink short hair framing the left side of her face and dark pink eyes. Boys at her school consider her very attractive, something she knows and takes great pride in. Her usual attire is her school uniform: a dark buttoned blazer with the school emblem on the left chest, a collared shirt, a ribbon tie, a short dark skirt, long socks, and loafers. She also wears a long-sleeved sweater under her blazer. Initially, Aira enjoyed her social status as the popular girl of Kami High and strived to maintain her reputation. Outwardly, she seemed sweet, innocent, and somewhat airheaded. Deep down, however, she was vain, arrogant, and callous—a side she only showed to a select few. Her beauty became a tool to mock her male peers, whom she despised for easily falling for her facade. She did not hesitate to act cruelly when provoked, such as when she anonymously spread a nasty rumor about Momo after Momo used her powers to drop a bathtub on her head in retaliation for teasing Okarun. Many of Aira's negative traits stem from the early loss of her mother. Back then, her father encouraged her to become a woman her mother could be proud of, which she misunderstood. Aira believed her popularity would make her more praise-worthy, and she sincerely believed that acting charming toward her peers and giving them hope was helping them find meaning in their lives, seemingly oblivious to the consequences. After discovering Okarun's golden ball, Aira developed a messiah complex, believing her new ability to see spirits was a divine sign that she was the chosen one destined to protect the world. This belief was reinforced by her vanity, as she viewed her beauty as a key reason for her selection. Upon witnessing her psychic abilities, which she dubbed "demon wings," she labeled Momo a demon and a rival. This facet of Aira faded after the Evil Eye was lodged in Jiji. Despite her arrogance, Aira is not devoid of remorse. Overcome with guilt for spreading the rumors about Momo, she confessed her actions, clearing Momo's name at the cost of her own popularity. She also sincerely apologized to Momo for putting her in danger with the Evil Eye. This memory even spurred her to keep fighting against the giants summoned by the Music Room Portraits. She is capable of genuine empathy and compassion. Despite being devoured by Acrobatic Silky, Aira pitied the yokai upon learning from Turbo Granny that she would be forgotten once her aura faded, and she ensured she reached Nirvana by embracing her and acknowledging her as her mother. Furthermore, she vowed to always remember her and expressed a sincere desire for Acrobatic Silky and her daughter to find peace together. witnessing Bamora's memories, Aira was moved to tears and vowed to defeat the Kur in Bamora's honor. Despite her serious nature, Aira has mischievous and playful moments. She thought about visiting Moe Moe Kikoho to tease Momo after learning she works as a maid and teased Momo and Jiji for sleeping too close while camping at the abandoned Serpo base. She also has a soft spot for cute things. Though she initially disapproved of Mantisian returning to Kamigoe, she changed her mind after meeting Chiquitita, whom she found adorable. Smitten with Momo's small size, Aira felt the urge to play with her like a doll. Aira's mother died when she was young. Shortly after, Aira saw a stranger on the street and ran to her, mistaking her for her mother. Realizing her error, she returned to her father, unaware that the mysterious woman had been following her throughout her life.
Turbo Granny is a well-known yokai who formerly resided in a tunnel in Shono City until her encounter with Momo Ayase and Okarun. After having her powers sealed inside Okarun, with her consciousness trapped within a plush doll, Turbo Granny makes a deal with Momo to help Okarun recover his kintama in exchange for her powers. In Dandadan, she served as the primary antagonist during her introductory arc but has since become a major supporting character. The yokai took the form of a very old woman with reddish-brown wrinkled skin, long thick hair, and large, wide-set eyes with yellow sclera. When she possesses targets, the victims transform into a mirror image of her, featuring a large mouth with teeth capable of biting through body parts. After her consciousness is removed from Okarun, Turbo Granny is forced to inhabit a maneki-neko porcelain doll. Turbo Granny is cruel, sadistic, and extremely foul-mouthed. She is also somewhat vulgar, having offered Okarun the chance to suckle from her breasts in exchange for consuming his family jewels. Possessing impressive running speed, she takes great pride in her pace and refuses to be underestimated. When challenged, she does not hesitate to use trickery to get her way. Despite her negative attitude, she has a compassionate side; Seiko stated that Turbo Granny often comforted the spirits of girls who died tragically, a reason she fused with the Earth Spirit in Shono City. Known as the "100km/h Granny," she terrorized Japan before being confined.
