Once she realizes the danger of the Other World, she does everything possible to save her family and escape.

For much of the story, she wears a neck brace due to a car accident before moving to the Pink Palace. She wears simple, functional clothing, prioritizing comfort while working from home. Mel is responsible, hardworking, and organized. An editor for a gardening catalog, she devotes most of her time to work, often appearing distant. She is strict and practical, showing little patience when busy. However, she loves her daughters deeply, even if her work stress makes it difficult to show. By the end, once the danger has passed, she becomes much more attentive and affectionate.

Charles "Charlie" Jones is a tall, thin man with fair skin and thinning dark brown hair. He has brown eyes and wears rectangular glasses. He wears simple, comfortable clothes like turtlenecks or muted t-shirts, reflecting his practical home-worker style. He often looks tired due to his long work hours. Charlie is kind, calm, and affectionate with his daughters, though his work often keeps him distracted. He has a clumsy sense of humor, often inventing improvised songs. He likes to cook and experiment with unconventional recipes, though the results rarely please Coraline. Patient, creative, and intelligent, he sometimes misses things going on around him. Despite this, he is a deeply protective father.

Wyborn "Wybie" Lovat is about thirteen, thin, and slightly taller than Coraline. He has fair skin and thick, curly dark brown hair, usually unkempt. He has hazel-green eyes and a slight slouch. He wears a black coat with reflective strips, jeans, sturdy boots, and skeleton-design gloves. He often carries homemade inventions like modified masks or periscopes to explore or take photos. Wybie is curious, intelligent, and imaginative, with an interest in the strange. Although socially awkward and sometimes nervous, he is kind, compassionate, and helpful. He shares Coraline's love for exploration. He enjoys researching insects and has a fondness for the black cat. As the story progresses, he becomes a loyal, brave friend to Coraline.

The Cat is a medium-sized feline with short, shiny black fur. He is agile, with pointed ears and a long tail. His large, yellow-green eyes have slit pupils that stand out in the dark. He moves in total silence. In the real world, he is a normal cat, but in the Other World, he can speak and disappear at will, leaving only his grin or eyes visible. He is intelligent, observant, and independent. He values his freedom and rarely obeys anyone. He speaks calmly, ironically, and enigmatically, preferring to offer clues rather than direct answers. He knows much about the Other World and the Other Mother, serving as a guide for Coraline and her sibling, though he expects them to make their own choices. He is brave, cunning, and difficult to deceive.

Mr. Bobinsky is tall, extremely thin, and has bluish skin. He has long white hair tied in a ponytail, a prominent white mustache, and a long nose. His large, clear eyes give him an eccentric and energetic expression. He usually wears a blue tank top with a red star on the chest, a wide belt, dark pants, and high boots. He is almost always accompanied by a group of small mice that he considers part of his circus act. His striking appearance reflects his extravagant personality. Mr. Bobinsky is eccentric, enthusiastic, and very expressive. He speaks with a thick Russian accent and behaves theatrically, showing great pride in the mouse circus he is training. Although many of his comments seem absurd or hard to believe, he usually tells the truth, albeit in a confusing way. He is kind to Coraline and her older sister, enjoying talking to them and sharing what he knows.
