The Rose's Story: Detective Simulator

Eldridge, St. Valentine's, 1925. A scholarship girl lies broken beneath the library's rose window; a hammer in her dead hand, the door barred from within. They are already calling it suicide. You are not.

The Rose's Story

Eldridge, northwest England, St. Valentine's morning, 1925. A port city of gaslight and theatres, where aristocrats' daughters study Latin at Cranwell and the East End foundries swallow men whole.

On the frosted lawn beneath the bell-tower of Rosestone Library lies Matilda Beckett — twenty years old, a foundry-man's daughter who fought her way into an aristocrats' college on talent and a famous, scandalous love-poem. The great rose window above her is smashed; a hammer rests in her dead hand; the door was barred from the inside. The precinct is already writing suicide.

But Matilda had, that very week, won a full scholarship to Oxford — and was invited up that tower, on St. Valentine's night, by an old friend. Girls like that do not jump. Sergeant Henry brings you the file before the inquest can close it.

  • 🗺️ A clickable city map: twenty doors across four districts — knock anywhere, but every visit costs time
  • 🔍 Investigate scenes Holmes-style: clues hide inside the prose; pin physical evidence and spoken leads to your corkboards
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 A live suspect board: motives, alibis and suspicion that move as you dig — and witnesses who lie to protect a lover, a name, a faith, a sister
  • ⏱️ Three periods a day, two actions each — the trail cools if you dawdle
  • ⚖️ When you're ready, walk into Thames Precinct and make your accusation. Right or wrong, the truth comes out — and gets graded.

A fair-play whodunit: everything you need is findable. Whether you find it — and how much of the rot beneath it you drag into the light — is another matter.

Characters

👮
Sergeant Wilfred HenryThames Precinct — your old friend & client

Fifty-four, grey-cropped, a great talker in a too-tight old uniform, leaning on a teak cane (a bad leg from some case he'll happily tell you about) and forever checking a pocket-watch "truer than the courthouse clock." Has survived a faction-ridden precinct for decades by knowing which doors not to kick. Brings you the official commissions, holds the cells, the files and the records — and plays the chair's questioner when you make your accusation. Difficult company, loyal to the bone, and quietly incorruptible on one point: nobody touches ordinary folk on his watch.

🧢
Benjamin "Ben" MarchYoung detective constable — your tag-along

Twenty-six, sandy hair, clear eyes, a uniform that never quite fits, forever clutching a little notebook (in which he mostly records YOUR cutting remarks). An over-eager rookie who muddles his terms and reads evidence aloud just when you wanted to watch a suspect's face — and yet, now and then, blunders straight onto the one question that cracks a case. Scolded like a son by the Sergeant, treated like an intern by you, and grins "teacher!" through all of it.

📓
Robin PageYour assistantCustomizable

Your sounding-board and second pair of eyes — shorthand faster than a typist, a memory for timetables, and a knack you have come to rely on (logic, the post-mortem table, reading a liar's pauses — whatever you trained them for). Came to 221B answering a three-line advertisement and never left; steadier than they look when a scene turns ugly.

⚕️
Dr. Edith MarshCoroner, Granville Infirmary

Precise, unsentimental, smoking thin cigarettes between autopsies. The one soul at Granville who writes down exactly what the body says — wounds, time, the small wrong details — which has made her thoroughly unpopular with a board that prefers its deaths tidy.

🥀
Annie BeckettThe victim's sister — your grieving caller

Eighteen, a literature student at Cranwell and her dead sister's dormitory roommate. She greets you red-eyed and trembling, the only soul who seems to truly mourn Matilda — sweet, soft-spoken, eager to help in any small way, forever in her brilliant sister's shadow and called all her life only "Matilda's sister". She presses a handkerchief to her mouth and begs you to find who did this. Everyone finds her harmless.

Win / Lose

The case ends only at a formal accusation at Thames Precinct (or if the player abandons it). Correct culprit = game.end win, with a grade in the label (及格/良好/优秀 by evidence depth and whether the hidden instigator and cover-up are exposed); wrong culprit = game.end lose — the real one slips into the fog. Either way, the full truth is told only after the ending.
