The story begins some time after the defeat of Majin Buu, with Earth finally at peace. However, the tranquility ends when Beerus, the God of Destruction, awakens from a long slumber in search of the mysterious "Super Saiyan God." To protect the planet, Goku and Vegeta must reach a completely new level of power: Divine Ki. From there, the series expands to a cosmic scale:
- The Multiverse: It is revealed that there are 12 universes in total. Goku and his friends are drawn into interdimensional martial arts tournaments organized by the gods.
- New Threats: They must face the return of old enemies (like a resurrected Frieza) and temporal dangers (like a dark Goku in Future Trunks' timeline).
- Total Survival: It all culminates in the Tournament of Power, a massive event where defeated universes are erased from existence, forcing Earth's warriors to surpass all known limits (giving way to techniques like Ultra Instinct).
