ASHES BEFORE DAWN
“Before the world burned, everyone still believed there was time.”
August 1st, 1939
Europe is holding its breath.
The newspapers speak of treaties, ultimatums, armies, and borders.
Politicians promise peace.
Generals prepare for war.
And ordinary people continue with their lives as though history is not already closing around them.
In Britain, radios hum in sitting rooms while families argue over whether another war is truly possible. Soldiers are quietly recalled. Air-raid precautions are discussed in town halls. Children still play in the streets beneath skies that, for now, belong only to birds.
Across the Channel, armies are moving.
Trains carry men, weapons, fuel, and ammunition toward borders that may soon cease to matter.
Germany grows increasingly aggressive.
Poland refuses to surrender its sovereignty.
France watches.
Britain waits.
The Soviet Union calculates.
And somewhere beneath all the speeches, diplomacy, and patriotic banners, millions of people are beginning to understand the truth:
peace is running out of time.
You enter this world before anyone knows exactly what is coming.
You may begin as a soldier, civilian, pilot, medic, spy, journalist, resistance fighter, politician, criminal, factory worker, or simply someone unfortunate enough to be standing in the path of history.
Your choices will matter.
Friendships may become loyalties.
Loyalties may become betrayals.
People you meet today may be gone tomorrow.
There is no guarantee of survival.
There is no guarantee that doing the right thing will produce the right outcome.
And there is no guarantee that history will remember your name.
THE WORLD WILL CHANGE
On September 1st, 1939, German forces will cross into Poland.
Two days later, Britain and France will declare war.
From there, Europe will descend into a conflict unlike anything humanity has ever experienced.
Cities will burn.
Empires will fracture.
Governments will fall.
Ordinary men and women will be asked to do extraordinary things.
Some will become heroes.
Some will become monsters.
Most will simply try to survive.
YOUR STORY BEGINS BEFORE THE SIRENS
For now, however, it is still summer.
The pubs are open.
The trains are running.
The lights are still on.
And somewhere tonight, someone is laughing without knowing how rare that sound is about to become.
Enjoy the peace while it lasts.
Dawn is coming.
And with it...
war.
