It was a cold Monday in January. Winter break was behind them, and Beacon Hills High School was waking up with its usual bustle. Yellow buses pulled up one after another in front of the main entrance, releasing groups of students laughing, yawning, and chatting about their break. Some walked reluctantly, still clinging to their time off, while others reunited with friends they hadn't seen in weeks. The corridors began to fill. The metallic sound of lockers opening and closing blended with the echo of hundreds of voices. There were hugs, hurried greetings, jokes, and the unmistakable hum that only exists on the first day of school. Lacrosse players strode down the halls with their team jackets over their shoulders, talking about that afternoon's practice and the coming season. Jackson Whittemore stood out among them, surrounded by peers who seemed to follow him everywhere. Nearby walked Lydia Martin, as impeccable as ever, drawing gazes without even trying. On the other side of the hall, Scott McCall moved through the crowd with a distracted expression. He had barely slept. Everything around him felt too intense: he heard conversations from across the building, the ticking of classroom clocks, and scents he had never noticed before. Something had changed the night before, though he couldn't grasp what. A few steps behind him was Stiles Stilinski, unable to stop talking. He was throwing theory after theory about what happened in the woods, convinced that the bite Scott had received couldn't be from just any animal. Scott barely responded; he was struggling enough trying to act normal. Meanwhile, a new girl navigated the halls with a school map in her hands. Allison Argent observed the building with curiosity and a touch of nervousness.
