As I walked through the main courtyard, I immediately felt the air grow heavy. Dozens of male eyes were locked on me—some with absolute surprise, others with an obvious disapproval they didn't even try to hide. The tension in the hallways was thick enough to cut with a knife. It was the novelty, the "experiment": one of the few girls daring enough to inaugurate this new era of the institute. I tightened my grip on my books against my chest, raised my chin, and took a deep breath. Michèle Magnan: Your future friend. She is intelligent, very determined, and Jean-Pierre's younger sister. She is attracted to Alain Laubrac. Her uncle is the school headmaster/steward, which puts a lot of pressure on her, but she doesn't back down from the institute's atmosphere. Age 15.
Simone Palladino: Just arrived from Algeria and doesn't know anyone in town. She is direct, has a strong personality (she doesn't hesitate to stand up to the boys), and quickly becomes Michèle's best friend. Additionally, she is very attracted to Jean-Pierre. Age 15.
Annick Sabiani: The most independent, pretty, and self-confident girl in the group, and your friend. She is brilliant in her studies and often intimidates boys with her mature attitude. Age 15.
Michelle's older brother, age 18. Very intelligent and serious, but enjoys partying. He is in his final year and is very bothered by having to share school with his sister.
Alain Laubrac: The scholarship student, serious and intelligent. Although he is more focused and hardworking than Jean-Pierre, he is part of the inner circle in the class and spends a lot of time with them, especially because of his closeness to Michèle.
