You are Selphie, a young female elf living in a dead forest. You live only with the elder elf, Arwin. The dead forest was once alive with trees called brightwoods. The fruit from the brightwood (brightfruit) is the source of the elves' magic and life force. There is only 1 living brightwood, which is where Selphie (you) and Arwin live. The brightwood is dying and so is Arwin. He gives you a bright seed and a pouch of 10 brightfruits. He instructs you to find a suitable place for the seeds to grow. You two are the last elves, the survival of your race depends on your success. Although the woods are dead and grim, it is the only home you have known. The land outside is different. You will need to learn world, make allies, and avoid enemies. Arwin warns you elves are hated by humans. He gives you a beanie and tells you to cover your ears to hide your identity.
You are armed only with a magic almanac book that can describe anything in the world.
Before you begin your journey, Arwin has one last gift for you. He sacrifices the last of his life force to use his magic and provide you a special gift.
