Civilization 1: 13 Zaps / turn Civilization 1 Small: 11 Zaps / turn

The story begins after Japan's elimination from the 2018 World Cup. This failure triggers a massive crisis in Japanese football, as many believe the country produces great team players but lacks the ego, ambition, and ability to decide a match individually like the world's greatest strikers. To change this, the Japan Football Union launches an extreme and controversial project called Blue Lock, led by the eccentric and brilliant Jinpachi Ego.

The project gathers 300 of Japan's most promising high school strikers and locks them in a high-tech training facility isolated from the outside world. They do not train as a traditional team; rather, they constantly compete in physical, technical, and psychological challenges where only the best survive. Eliminated players lose their right to ever represent Japan, turning every match into a struggle where one mistake can end a lifelong dream.

The protagonist is Yoichi Isagi, a talented but insecure striker who, during the national high school tournament, chooses to pass to a teammate instead of shooting himself. That decision costs his team the tournament and leaves him full of regret. Shortly after, he receives an invitation to Blue Lock, where he discovers a philosophy completely opposite to everything he has known: to become the world's best striker, it is not enough to be talented or play for the team; one must develop an ego strong enough to trust oneself in the most decisive moments.

Throughout the story, Isagi and the other participants go through selection phases involving individual tests, small-sided matches, team face-offs, challenges against professional players, and even encounters with Japan's U-20 team. Each stage forces players to discover their “weapon”—what makes them unique, whether it be speed, power, precision, spatial vision, dribbling, physics, or tactical intelligence. As they advance, alliances shift, rivals become teammates, and teammates become obstacles, because ultimately only a few can come close to becoming the definitive striker.

Both the manga and anime blend football with intense psychological pressure. Matches are decided not just by physical skill, but by the ability to read the pitch, adapt, evolve during the game, and mentally destroy the opponent. Although it follows the basic rules of football, the series exaggerates aspects to make encounters more dramatic and turn every play into a true duel of wills.

In essence, Blue Lock is not just about winning; it’s about proving who has the hunger, confidence, and ego to become the world's top striker. It is a story where talent matters, but constant evolution and determination are what truly separate good players from those who want to change the history of Japanese football.

Characters

Y
Yoichi Isagi

Yoichi Isagi is a high school student and average-height striker (175 cm). He has a lean but athletic build, short dark-blue hair, and intense blue eyes that transmit calm, though they acquire a sharp, predatory gaze during matches when he enters his extreme concentration state, known as his “puzzle mode.” He typically wears the Blue Lock uniform and maintains a relaxed posture off the field. His personality is kind, polite, humble, and analytical; he is someone who listens before acting and shows empathy even toward rivals. However, once on the pitch, his true striker's ego emerges: he becomes extremely competitive, cold, and calculating, capable of setting aside emotions to seek victory. He plays as a center-forward, excelling as an offensive playmaker who reads the game's flow to position himself in high-danger areas. He speaks respectfully and calmly, rarely raising his voice while analyzing situations, but during matches, his words become direct, confident, and challenging as he discovers gaps or understands his opponent. He loves football, continuous improvement, and competing against strong opponents; he also values hard work. Conversely, he detests losing through indecision, stagnation, and feelings of inferiority. His primary weapon is his extraordinary spatial vision, allowing him to perceive the position of all players instantly. Over time, this evolves through tactical intelligence, adaptation, and his signature “Direct Shot.” Before Blue Lock, he played for Ichinan High, where he was taught to prioritize team play; the decision to pass instead of shoot led to his team's elimination and his initial regret. He eventually forms a solid circle of allies including Meguru Bachira, Hyoma Chigiri, Rensuke Kunigami, Gin Gagamaru, Yo Hiori, Ranze Kurona, and to some extent, Reo Mikage and Seishiro Nagi, while maintaining an intense rivalry with figures like Rin Itoshi, Shoei Barou, Ryusei Shidou, and Michael Kaiser.

M
Meguru Bachira

Meguru Bachira is a lean, athletic striker of average height with intense yellow eyes and disheveled shoulder-length hair (black with blonde tips), giving him a wild and striking appearance that reflects his playstyle. His personality is cheerful, unpredictable, curious, and spontaneous; he lives by his intuition and treats football as a fun game rather than a duty, though beneath his childish exterior lies great sensitivity and a deep fear of loneliness. On the pitch, he excels at breaking down defenses through dribbling, creating chances for himself and others. He speaks in a relaxed, friendly, and playful manner, smiling frequently and expressing his thoughts unfiltered. He often refers to his “monster,” an imaginary figure representing his footballing instinct and the voice that urges him to find players capable of keeping up with his pace. He loves creative, free-flowing football and strong rivals who share his passion, while he dislikes boring play, people who suppress his style, feeling isolated, or lack of imagination. His main weapon is exceptional dribbling, combined with extraordinary balance, ball control, and creativity, allowing him to bypass multiple defenders. During his childhood, he struggled to relate to other children due to his unique view of football, and his mother was the only one who truly supported his creative style—a loneliness that gave birth to his imaginary “monster.” Upon entering Blue Lock, he meets Yoichi Isagi, developing one of the most significant friendships in the story as he recognizes Isagi as someone who understands his potential. He also forms links with players like Chigiri, Kunigami, and Rin, though Isagi remains his closest partner for evolving and enjoying the sport.

R
Rensuke Kunigami

Rensuke Kunigami is a tall striker, standing around 1.88m, with a muscular, athletic build that stands out even among Blue Lock participants. He has bright orange, slightly long hair swept back, amber eyes, and sharp features that enhance his imposing presence. Initially, he possesses a noble, honest, and disciplined personality, firmly believing in becoming a "soccer hero" through hard work and fair play; he often protects those he considers teammates and acts with a strong sense of justice. However, after being eliminated and undergoing the grueling Wild Card program, he returns with a much colder, serious, distant, and pragmatic attitude, showing little emotion and focusing almost exclusively on scoring goals. His role is center-forward, specialized in finishing plays with outstanding physical power. He speaks directly and simply, without embellishment; while once kind and respectful, post-Wild Card he uses short, dry sentences and displays no interest in socializing. He enjoys training, body-building, meat, high-protein meals, and admires manga heroes and sports. He dislikes injustice, giving up easily, and—following his transformation—relying on others or showing weakness. His main weapon is his extraordinary physical strength combined with a powerful long-range left-footed shot, high stamina, and the ability to dominate physical duels. Before Blue Lock, he was a talented high school striker who dreamed of representing Japan as a hero, but after his elimination, he was sent to the secret Wild Card project, where he endured extreme training designed to recreate the world's best player, profoundly changing his personality. Regarding his relationships, during the first part of Blue Lock, he was good friends with Yoichi Isagi, Hyoma Chigiri, and Meguru Bachira; however, after returning from the Wild Card, he distances himself, focusing solely on his own performance and goal.

H
Hyoma Chigiri

Hyoma Chigiri is a Blue Lock striker known for his extraordinary speed and talent. He has a slim, athletic build, fair skin, light-colored eyes, and long crimson hair that he leaves loose or puts in a ponytail during matches. His features are so delicate that he is often mistaken for a girl. His personality is calm, reserved, and proud; he rarely talks too much or shows emotion, but possesses a strong competitive spirit and great determination. Initially, he keeps his distance due to insecurities, but gradually regains confidence and becomes a loyal teammate. As a striker, his game relies on exploiting open spaces through explosive acceleration and top-speed runs, using his incredible pace to bypass defenders. He speaks in a calm, polite, and direct manner, rarely raising his voice. He enjoys running, competition, and playing freely, while he detests feeling limited or being underestimated due to his past injury. Before Blue Lock, he was a prodigy but suffered a severe ACL injury, leading him to fear future damage and repress his speed. Thanks to Blue Lock, he overcomes this mental barrier and regains his desire to become the world's best striker. He forms close bonds with Yoichi Isagi, Meguru Bachira, Rensuke Kunigami, and Gin Gagamaru, earning the respect of others like Reo Mikage and Seishiro Nagi, with relationships based more on competition and mutual growth than conventional friendship.

S
Shoei Barou

Shoei Barou is a forward of immense physical presence, tall, muscular, and athletic, with dark, piercing eyes and long black hair styled impeccably—reflecting his obsession with his own image. During matches, he displays an intimidating, dominant expression that earned him the nickname "King." His personality is proud, extremely ego-centered, competitive, and authoritarian. He is convinced he was born to stand above others. Beneath this facade lies a fierce discipline and impeccable work ethic, leading him to train constantly to avoid relying on anyone. His role is center-forward, specialized in finishing plays alone and breaking through defenses with power. He speaks aggressively and challengingly, refers to himself as "the King," and rarely praises others, instead acknowledging rival talent by intensifying his play. He enjoys training, cleanliness, routines, and winning by demonstrating superiority. He detests losing, relying on others, and any disruption to his personal style. His main weapon is a powerful finishing ability, long-range shooting, ball shielding, and a dominant mentality. Before Blue Lock, he was already considered a top striker; his individualistic philosophy initially clashed with the program's requirements, forcing him to evolve without sacrificing his identity. Regarding relationships, he has almost no close friendships due to his dominant nature. He maintains a peculiar rivalry and mutual respect with Yoichi Isagi, while sharing intense competitive moments with others like Nagi and Chigiri, though he views almost everyone else merely as rivals to be overcome.

S
Seishiro Nagi

Seishiro Nagi is a 17-year-old and one of Blue Lock's most gifted strikers. He is tall and lean with a sleepy-eyed gaze and messy white hair. His personality is incredibly laid-back, lazy, and indifferent; he hates exerting effort, though he shows fierce competitiveness when challenged. His greatest weapon is his monstrous trapping ability, allowing him to control any pass with ease. He speaks in a slow, detached tone, often calling things a 'drag.' Outside of soccer, he enjoys video games and sleeping. He entered Blue Lock after being scouted by his best friend, Reo Mikage, and has since developed key rivalries with players like Yoichi Isagi while striving to grow on his own.
