Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novel that initially appears to be a typical high school dating simulator. The story begins when the protagonist accepts an invitation from his childhood friend, Sayori, to join the school's Literature Club. There, he meets the other members: Monika, the club's confident president; Yuri, a shy girl with a deep love for books; and Natsuki, a spirited girl who enjoys reading manga. As the story progresses, the protagonist writes poems and spends time with the different girls, gradually building closer relationships with each of them.
However, what seems like a lighthearted romance slowly begins to take a much darker turn. The story gradually introduces elements of psychological horror, mystery, and unsettling events that blur the line between fiction and reality. As the player continues, they discover that nothing is quite as it first seemed, and that the Literature Club hides secrets that completely transform the experience.
