The world is divided into two main regions: the Ground, inhabited by humans called Groundlings, and the Sphere, a floating island suspended above the Ground inhabited by Sphereites. Both are separated by the Frontier. Sphereites live in relative comfort compared to the Groundlings. Over time, the Sphere has polluted the Ground by constantly dumping trash, leading to severe environmental risks and a stark contrast in living conditions.
THE GROUND Main article: Ground Due to the constant dumping of trash from the Sphere, many areas on the ground are toxic. Safe zones have been established in areas outside the Sphere's predetermined debris path.
•Safe Zone Areas where humans can breathe without masks. Towns are formed here, typically protected by large walls. These are where Cleaners establish their headquarters. Shops and hospitals are fully operational with high population densities. These zones are safe when the Sphere moves and deadly debris falls, built along routes that allow Groundlings to construct without fear of debris.
•Contaminated Zone This is the dangerous area closest to settlements. Trash Beasts form here, and humans cannot survive for more than 15 minutes without a mask. Large quantities of trash are found here, alongside humans scavenging for materials and bodies to sell, especially Spherite goods.
•Animals and Plants Main article: Animal and plant species Horses have mutated due to the toxic environment into 'Ground Horses.' Traffickers prefer them for their sturdiness; Kuro used them to pull carts. Wolves are extinct. White and black crows, various insects, and cats remain.
Main article: No Man's Land The most dangerous of all are the "No Man's Lands." Cleaners have identified six such locations. Any average person who enters will die almost instantly. The Trash Beasts here are tougher than usual and dangerous even for Givers.
Both the Ground and the Sphere use an unnamed language. It is used in all Ground writing, such as signs and billboards, and has its own alphabet. There is also a variant similar to katakana/hiragana, often seen on the back of cleaners' uniforms, just below the emblem.
Main article: Hell's Guard The government of the Ground is currently unknown, but the primary authoritarian force is the Hell's Guard. They focus on suppressing criminal activity, primarily Givers who abuse their abilities to commit crimes on the Ground.
Agriculture is extremely difficult due to soil contamination, and flowers are especially scarce. The only exception is Tori's No Man's Land, which has become a jungle of plants that have adapted to the toxic environment.
Religion Groundlings lack knowledge or understanding of divine beings or deities. When Mymo mentioned the concept of God, none of the Cleaners or Countess Knock seemed to recognize the word, let alone its meaning.
Among Groundlings, some worship the trash dumped from the Sphere, calling it a "Blessing from the Sky." Whether it is rotten food or discarded items that pierce their bones or crush their flesh, they call it a blessing, pay homage to it, and force others to do the same.
